What Is ADAS?

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) refers to any type of assistance to the driver that is automated. This can be something as simple as auto-on headlights or rain sensing wipers.

ADAS can also assist drivers by utilizing night vision technology and sensors that monitor blind spots. At it's most advanced you have lane departure sensors, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automated parking and collision avoidance systems.

Whenever an ADAS equipped vehicle has a major collision or the windshield is replaced these ADAS systems require precise calibration to function properly to protect the driver and those around them. Calibration is also required whenever a sensor or its mounting bracket is removed and replaced, there is a change in tire size, the front airbag deploys (when it deflects off the windshield) or repairs are made to a car roof that has a sensor bracket mounted to it.

What kinds of ADAS systems are there?

Some features now come standard in new vehicles, and others are optional, however, most, of the systems within ADAS fall under these categories.

  • Adaptive - system makes changes/adapts based on input from environment
  • Automated - takes control and preforms certain functions that a driver cannot do safely
  • Monitoring - uses sensors, cameras, radar, and LIDAR or infrared to monitor the surroundings to assess and make corrections
  • Warning - alert the driver of potential issues with their vehicle or other vehicles in the environment.
